    See and Smile mission in Morocco 2019

    The main activity of the ophthalmologists involved with this mission consists of operating on patients with cataracts. This prevalent disease is one of the main causes of blindness in the world. By replacing the clouded eye lens with an artificial lens through microsurgery, these patients are able to regain their sight. Other diseases, such as glaucoma and infectious diseases, are also diagnosed and treated.

    The main activity in plastic surgery is the correction of congenital cleft lip and palate. The latter condition is the most frequent congenital facial defect and occurs in approximately 1/2000 births in Belgium. Almost all patients with cleft lip and / or palate are operated on at a very young age in Belgium. The lip usually closes around the 4th to 6th month, while the palate closes around 1.5 years.

    Mission Bimesa in Flores Indonesia 2017

    BIMESA vzw, in full Belgian Indonesian Medical Education and Social Association, was founded in 2004. The starting point of the association is voluntary work and offering help, regardless of origin, religion or culture. After the devastating Tsunami (2005), Bimesa was active in Aceh; from 2006 the focus was on Bajawa (Flores), where teams of surgeons, anesthetists, stomatologists, ophthalmologists and dentists have been working since then. There were also one-time missions to Bukittinggi (Sumatra), Makassar (Sulawesi) and Siau (Sulawesi). Bimesa operation includes medical missions, material assistance, teaching and fundraising.
